What to expect: 4 Step Process
1 CONNECT
CONSULTATION - We begin with a brief conversation about what you might be interested in creating together. From there, I will provide an estimate. Upon your approval, we will enter into a client / artist relationship, working collaboratively to ensure you get the results you are looking for. You will provide reference images of your loved one.
REFLECTION - We will schedule a deeper conversation by phone or video call to discuss your loved one’s life in more detail and what you want the sculpture to communicate.
2 CREATE
I will sculpt the model, or maquette in clay. I will keep you updated on your project’s progress and we will have reviews at key milestones. When you approve the final model, we will move on to producing the sculpture in a permanent material.
3 PRODUCE
MOLDING AND CASTING - Once the clay model is complete, we will make a mold and cast the final piece in a permanent material. Casting gives us choice of material, peace of mind in the case of loss or damage, and the ability to create reproductions, even years later.
MATERIAL CHOICE - I will help you choose the best material for your project based on your unique needs. For indoor applications, I recommend Terra cotta (fired clay) or Hydrocal (gypsum cement). For outdoor applications, Concrete or Bronze may be preferable.
FINISHING - You’ll select from a curated set of hand finishes. I can slip cast in light neutral, warm terra cotta, or deep brown clay. If you prefer a metallic finish on clay or Hydrocal, I will hand paint a custom patina using metallic powders and base colors to achieve the desired effect. As final step, I will apply a natural wax to ensure a durable satin finish.
4 DELIVER
We will arrange for your sculptures to be shipped to you and/or your loved ones or to your funeral home to transfer ashes. If the piece is large and requires installation or casting onsite, I can travel to you and oversee installation. Our work is done and you can enjoy their presence in your space.
Timing and Pricing
TIMING - As an independent artist, timelines will vary based on the complexity of your project and my workload. While every sculpture is unique, I will make every effort to accurately estimate and deliver on promised turnaround times.
PRICING - I am committed to transparent pricing. While you are commissioning an original work of high quality art, there are a number of decisions that affect the price of the sculpture. Size, materials, form, and number of reproductions are some of the factors that determine the price. Typical projects start at a few thousand dollars.
We can discuss options to make it work within your budget. The first step is completing the form below. Once we discuss the project, I will provide you with a quote, as well as options for consideration.
